چکیده

Acknowledgements I am undoubtedly indebted to my two supervisors, Alf van der Poorten and Hugh Williams. Most students would feel lucky to have one good supervisor whereas I had the privilege of having two excellent mathematicians to guide me. Their help, wisdom and infinite patience has been invaluable, and I am very grateful for it. The Mathematics Department at Macquarie University has provided a pleasant and enjoyable environment for the past few years. I would also like to thank both the University of Calgary and the University of Manitoba for their warm and generous hospitality during my visits to Canada. Those visits were made possible by an ARC IREX grant, and these visits were vital in the development of the thesis. Also, I owe a great debt to my Canadian hosts, Lynne Romuld in Winnipeg and Kris and Gardy Vasudevan in Calgary, who took me in and made me feel welcome. Last, but not least I would also like to thank all my family and friends, in particular my lovely wife Cath for all her patience and inspiration. Certificate This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Macquarie University. It has not been submitted for a higher degree at any other university or institution.

Subexponential Class Group Computation in Quadratic Orders (abstract)

In 1989, the first subexponential algorithm for computing the class group of an imaginary quadratic order was introduced by Hafner and McCurley. Their algorithm is based on an integer factorization algorithm due to Seysen, and is conditional on the truth of the Extended Riemann Hypothesis. Not long after, their result was generalized to arbitrary algebraic number fields by Buchmann. Efficient v...

On the real quadratic fields with certain continued fraction expansions and fundamental units

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the real quadratic number fields $Q(sqrt{d})$ which contain the specific form of the continued fractions expansions of integral basis element  where $dequiv 2,3( mod  4)$ is a square free positive integer. Besides, the present paper deals with determining the fundamental unit$$epsilon _{d}=left(t_d+u_dsqrt{d}right) 2left.right > 1$$and  $n_d$ and $m_d...

The mean number of 3-torsion elements in the class groups and ideal groups of quadratic orders

We determine the mean number of 3-torsion elements in the class groups of quadratic orders, where the quadratic orders are ordered by their absolute discriminants. Moreover, for a quadratic order O we distinguish between the two groups: Cl3(O), the group of ideal classes of order 3; and I3(O), the group of ideals of order 3. We determine the mean values of both |Cl3(O)| and |I3(O)|, as O ranges...

The Solution of Fully Fuzzy Quadratic Equations Based on Restricted ‎Variation

Firstly, in this paper, we apply the Fuzzy Restricted Variation Method to achieve an analytical and approximate unsymmetrical fuzzy solution for Fully Fuzzy Quadratic Equation. In this application, after finding the real root of 1-cut of $tilde{A}tilde{X}^{2}+tilde{B}tilde{X}+tilde{C}=tilde{D}$, initial guess is always chosen with possible unknown parameters that leads to highly accurate soluti...

Ternary quadratic forms over number fields with small class number

We enumerate all positive definite ternary quadratic forms over number fields with class number at most 2. This is done by constructing all definite quaternion orders of type number at most 2 over number fields. Finally, we list all definite quaternion orders of ideal class number 1 or 2.

Class numbers of orders in cubic fields

Class numbers of orders in quadratic fields, or, what amounts to the same, of binary quadratic forms, have been studied extensively in literature. Just as examples we quote [15] and [14]. In this paper we consider the class numbers of orders in cubic fields. We state our result. A cubic field is either totally real or it has one real and two complex embeddings. We call it complex in the latter ...
